The faces that fed the database
The Museum of Collective Expression, explores how facial expressions, so intimate and individualistic to us, are seen through the lens of AI databases.
We react to what we see - scrunching our noses, widening our eyes, frowning our eyebrows - these micro-reactions mirror our feelings.
In the face of AI, its fast paced nature, and more so its infiltration into every one of our realms, it is only fair that we question its ability to comprehend us.The alarming fact that AI databases are created without consent and often function without a predetermined criteria of data that is fed into them only serves as a point of further concern for our lack of choice.
My museum is an intentional collection of images that is a growing archive of dynamic human expressions. In the larger sense, the museum's digital nature makes it accessible to anyone around the world. This expands not only its reach but also its database, which in turn acts as its archive.
The exhibit involves a display of a “face” (generated by combining all the faces in the database). Viewers walk up to the display and their reaction is then captured by a hidden camera. This reaction is then fed into the database, and morphed with the growing AI “face”. This new “face” is then displayed to the next viewer. This results in an ever-changing database, with a constantly evolving exhibit for every viewer.

Disclaimer : While the exhibit involves a "hidden camera" it's purpose is not to take photos without the viewer's consent but rather to ensure the reaction by the viewer is unhindered by the conciousness that being faced with a camera brings with it.
